Lucky to be with RAS - Internship Experience at Clean & Green Singapore and World Toilet Day

“Restroom Association ( Singapore)”, this word came into my attention when my Liaison Officer announced to me that I would be attached to this organization for internship. If I was not posted to RAS, I would not even notice that this organization actually exists!

I had a great time working in RAS with such a great team of colleagues. I could still remember that very first moment when I stepped into RAS on 12 September 2007. It was a brand new environment for me as that was the first time I was taking up an office job. I just could not help feeling nervous and excited with the thought of working with no one I knew, in a brand new environment

Through the three-month internship with RAS, I got to learn and see how did an organization operate and organize events. It was really a good learning experience for me as it would be beneficial to me when I step into the working society after my graduation.

A summary of events which I helped out during my internship includes Clean and Green Singapore and World Toilet Day. I was glad that RAS really gave me the chance to assist in the planning of events. At the World Toilet Day event, I was fully in charge of the display booth setup and transportation. As for Clean and Green Singapore, I was told to help out in the logistics planning for the wonderland section instead of daily routine administrative tasks. These chances would be hard to come by if I were to work in a large organization. Hence I do treasure these experiences I had in events planning.

Nevertheless, my internship has come to an end of a chapter. I believe I would not have gained that much exposure if I were to be attached to another company instead. Thus, I was lucky to be attached to RAS for my internship.

Enjoyable to be with RAS - Internship Experience at Clean & Green Singapore and World Toilet Day

As interns in RAS, we were required to help out the office staffs with their admin work, from sending out associate membership forms to helping out in the Clean & Green Carnival which was recently held at Suntec City Convention Hall. We also helped out at the World Toilet Day event which was held at Singapore Management University (SMU). We learnt a lot of valuable lessons during our one-month attachment here at RAS. We will apply what we have learnt to our future jobs or attachments.

During the Clean & Green Carnival, we experienced how it was like to plan and prepare a big event to be presented to the public. We learnt how to manage situations when there were last-minute changes. We learnt how to handle kindergarten kids at the wonderland booth and also handle primary, secondary school students and even adults at the RAS booth. As for the kindergarten kids, we had to vary the pitch of our voice to make the game more interesting and also had to attract the attention from those who just arrived. We even attracted the attention of the primary school pupils with our ‘Loo-tiqutte Quest’. We learnt how to handle the crowd that was building up at the RAS booth. It was hard to entertain the upper primary and secondary students as they got bored when not entertained.

At the World Toilet Day event which was organized in Singapore Management University (SMU), we gave out notebooks and hand phone charms to attract the public to support World Toilet Day. We had to verbally inform the public what World Toilet Day is about.

We really enjoyed the one-month attachment here at RAS and we really learnt a lot from past events that had happened.
